Are you on Spiritual Bypass?

22/12/2021

Spirituality is everywhere! If you’ve got the remotest interest in anything spiritual, it doesn’t take much scrolling to see courses or workshops appear on Facebook or Google that promise the answer to all your challenges connecting with the Divine, receiving messages from Spirit, or learning how to read the tarot in 5 minutes.

We live in a world where you can find a yoga or meditation class in every town, even online now that we’re more connected with Zoom, Meet or Teams. There are so many people offering their services on YouTube and Instagram that it can seem like the answers to all your problems are right there for the taking.

I will never say that taking a regular class or joining in with these workshops is a bad thing, I offer some of these services myself. However, it is so important to remember that whilst many of these one-off sessions can bring peace at that moment or make things feel OK for half an hour, they’re not a long-term fix. Life isn’t always rosy, and spiritual growth doesn’t always happen overnight. One class will not solve the issues that have been with you for what may be many years. These changes, growth and development can take many years to evolve, perhaps even a lifetime, and anywhere that offers you a quick fix is essentially offering you a spiritual bypass.

It’s easy to put to one side the psychological wounds we may have experienced in our lives or emotional issues for a short period of time, and use spiritual practices as something to hide behind. Declaring that you are now living in love and light and that life is grand so long as you stay in the positive can very easily do more harm than good. Having been through my fair share of therapy, spiritual and emotional bypassing was soon rooted out - I’d done more than enough of it and knew things had to change.

Throughout the whole process of working through my ‘stuff’, one thing I did learn, was that spiritual practice was all well and good but it had to come with a good dose of self-love. Learning the importance of compassion for oneself and others meant that I began a true healing process. Counselling isn’t for everybody, I accept that, but if you choose to use spirituality as a way of working through your challenges, avoid using it as a crutch or a way to avoid or suppress those uncomfortable aspects of life.

Be prepared to work through false beliefs, illusions, self-sabotaging behaviours, and allow yourself to surrender to the darker aspects of yourself, to face the pain and get to the point where you can release it.

If it feels like it’s a ‘healing in a box’ offer, it’s probably a sign to stay clear. Seek out authenticity and the people who truly want to help you. Ask questions, ask others for their experiences, and listen to your own intuition as it will inevitably guide you to the right place for you.
